CHEFCHAOUEN | THE BLUE CITY

At 8:00 am your driver will come to meet you in the Hotel of Fes where you will be accommodated and leave towards Chefchaouen, which we will reach in 3 hours full of travel.

On our arrival you will be free to visit the city of Chefchaouen (more simply called Chaouen), coveted by photographers.

Chefchaouen, was founded in 1471 and is located in the cavity between two mountains (hence its name “ech-Chaoua”, the horns). Narrow, steep streets with white and indigo plaster buildings, small squares, beautifully decorated fountains and houses with richly embellished doors, along with red roofs of tiles, make it a delightful town. Chaouen is considered a “holy city” as it has eight mosques. Its original population was mainly made up of Andalusian exiled people, both Muslim and Jewish, which is why the ancient part of the city looks very similar to that of the Andalusian villages, with small streets with irregular paths. The oldest part of the city has been built in the upper part of the mountain where the springs of the Ras al-Ma river can also be found. The city centre corresponds to the square of Uta al-Hamman, where there is the fortress and a mosque with octagonal base tower. The new city was built further down.

In the past, access to the city was forbidden to foreigners; it was the Spanish troops who opened Chaouen once they took control of the northern part of Morocco to establish their protectorate.

In the afternoon we will back to Fes and the service ends with the drop-off to the same Hotel.
