BRIDES FESTIVAL IMILCHIL
Brides Festival Imilchil: every year in September, between the second and third week, in the High Atlas there is an “unusual” festival, those of weddings!
In the Berber village of Imilchil (which is several hours’ drive from Marrakech), this festival is held to remember a love story, two lovers divided by belonging to two different clans: the Ait Yazza and the Ait Ibrahim.
Legend tell about two lovers whose marriage was strongly opposed, so the two, in desperation, committed suicide. The many tears poured for them ended up filling two lakes, one for the bride and one for the groom and it is in correspondence with these lakes that weddings are celebrated.
Since then, to remember the event, was established this festival during which girls are free to choose their boyfriend and anyone who decides to marry at that time will not meet any opposition.
The party lasts three days and the virgin girls, divorced women and widows in search of a partner, meet for this incredible event.
But be careful! Young women, if they find a boyfriend, will have to wait a year to celebrate the wedding 🙂
During the festival of course there is no shortage of muse and dances and it is therefore a really interesting way to get into the Berber culture and learn about the customs and traditions!
This Festival is a good opportunity to discover this part of Morocco, rich in history, culture and breathtaking landscapes.
If you are in Morocco during the Festival, don’t miss the opportunity to learn more about this aspect too! We are looking forward to your visit with our offers.
We do not know if the Festival will be held in 2021. In 2020 it was cancelled due to covid19
